16 Jul The move towards BPA free
It’s easy to see why concern exists when discussions of BPA arise. Bisphenol A is a chemical used by the food industry to line food and beverage packaging to protect food from contamination. It is also used to make plastics, taking the form of items such as water bottles and sports equipment. Its widespread use saw 4 million tonnes of BPA produced in 2015 for manufacturing polycarbonate plastic.
Since the introduction of Bisphenol A, research has been conducted around the world with regards to its safety. The general consensus found by government and independent safety bodies concludes that BPA poses no real risk at the rate it is typically ingested by humans.
Even so, research on BPA has produced some questionable results, linking the chemical to negative neurological effects, obesity and cancer.
Despite health bodies declaring BPA safe for use, many manufacturers around the world are beginning to phase the chemical out. In 2010 the Australian government announced a voluntary phasing out of BPA use in polycarbonate baby bottles, and in 2012 the United States’ Food and Drug Administration announced a similar course of action.
Although BPA has been deemed safe prior to 2017, a new report from the European Chemicals Agency has regarded BPA as a substance of very high concern due to its properties related to endocrine disruption (chemicals that interfere with hormones, causing obesity and other problems).
It is thus up to consumers to determine whether to continue buying products containing BPA. Many companies are beginning to cease the use of BPA in their products, instead using replacement chemicals deemed to be safer.
